Woman Jailed For Getting Her 5-year-old Son Drunk

A drunken mother has been jailed after encouraging her son to drink shots of homemade alcohol. Kylie Eastwood, 36, allowed her five-year-old son to down several shots of homemade grappa, which tests later revealed had a 44 per cent alcohol proof. The mother-of-six will serve at least eight months after a judge ruled she had failed to stay sober since the incident in July 2008.

The mother-of-six had a relapse in April when she got drunk and turned on the gas of an open oven while her eight-month-old son slept in another room. The boy’s father confiscated the alcohol when he caught his child drinking the alcohol at their home in the town of Moe, near Melbourne. He later called an ambulance after he found Eastwood cheering the five-year-old as he consumed more shots in the kitchen. When police arrived at the home, they found the young boy was so intoxicated that he was ‘making grunting noises’ and walking into walls. He was hospitalised with a blood alcohol level of 0.09, and police believe he consumed between four to six shots of the potent home-brewed grape brandy.

‘He likes his alcohol and asked me for a drink, and I told him, “Well OK, just one”,’ said Eastwood in her initial police interview. ‘At the time I didn’t see the severity of it but I tell you what, the next morning I did.’

Eastwood originally pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering serious injury and failing to protect a child from harm and was sentenced to five months in jail, which was suspended for two years.

She later changed her plea to not guilty after prosecutors had appealed her sentence on the grounds that it was inadequate. Judge Margaret Rizkalla said that Eastwood had made attempts at rehabilitation, but the latest incident of her failing to care for her children had to be taken into account. ‘The offence is a serious one, in the context of your offending it is most serious,’ she told Eastwood.

‘In the last two years or so you have clearly made some significant attempts to deal with your alcohol problems.

‘In my view this matter cannot be regarded as exceptional.’ Prosecutor David Cordy said Eastwood had had enough ‘last chances’ and needed to be jailed so she realised the consequences of her actions.

‘It must be demonstrated to her in no uncertain terms that she will be in prison if this happens again,’ he said.

The disgraced mother was additionally ordered to serve a four-month suspended sentence for another conviction related to her leaving three children under the age of 10 at home alone for several hours while she went out drinking with a friend. Eastwood is required to serve at least five months in jail before she is eligible for parole but it has not yet been confirmed if she will lose custody of her six children.

This sad excuse for a mother should not be able to be alone with these children EVER AGAIN!!! Hopefully their dad has some fu*king sense…
