The Grenadines are often swiped by storms, though until Hurricane Tomas came along last fall, the 18-island chain hadn’t taken a direct hit. Tomas’s 75mph winds wrecked 600 homes and displaced 1,200 islanders (damage the World Bank has pledged $5 million to help repair). In addition to surveying the backdrop to the Pirates of the Caribbean films, tourists can skip to the north side of St. Vincent to see the areas hit hardest.
