Sometimes one disaster begets another. In the decade after the Soufrière Hills volcano started erupting in 1995, ash and lava falloff rushed into the ocean, causing a small tsunami. The capital city of Plymouth became a modern Pompeii, with all but the tops of buildings buried beneath debris. Much of the Caribbean island is still closed off, but tourists can glimpse the lava flows on cruises to Montserrat’s southern coast.
