Maasai Singleton Is Scrambling To Come Up With $30K Tuition For School Where Dad Is Set To Teach
The son of acclaimed film director John Singleton has been forced to raise money for his college tuition online after his father suddenly cut him off, BOSSIP has learned.
Singleton told his son Maasai last month that he was too broke to pay for the final leg of his studies at the University of Southern California, where he’s majoring in screenwriting, just like his father. Because Singleton abruptly stopped paying in the middle of the school year, Maasai’s chances of getting financial aid or a scholarship are next to impossible. The director told his son to apply for a loan, but then refused to apply as a co-signer, a source with knowledge of the situation told BOSSIP.
But Maasai, 21, is determined to finish school, and set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money so he can graduate.
“With only one month before my final semester, my father has informed me that he won’t be helping me with tuition,” Maasai wrote on his fundraising page. “The timing of this information is such that I’m not able to apply for many financial aid options that would otherwise be available.”
“I’ve met with the financial aid office, and even with loans, I simply won’t be able to make up for the nearly $30,000 due this semester to cover the final 20 units that I need to graduate,” Maasai added, according to the Go Fund Me page. “Tuition is due in just three weeks.”
Ironically, while Maasai struggles to stay at USC, his father is set to begin teaching the course “The Emergence Of Cultural Cinema” next semester at the same school.
Singleton’s broke claims don’t hold any water, our source said, and it seems as though he’s cutting back on his kids’ expenses in order to finance his lifestyle. BOSSIP revealed earlier this year that Singleton successfully sued his ex-wife Akousia Busia to lower his child support payments for their daughter, Hadar after he said he wasn’t raking in the dough like he once was.
But besides his home on the West Coast, the “Baby Boy” director has assets like a condo in Miami and a boat in California, where our source said he frequently hosts barbecues and provides the booze.
Meanwhile, in a short video Maasai made for his online fundraising effort, he spoke of his resolve to graduate because of the need for diverse storytellers in Hollywood.
“I want people to donate so I can get out there and I can get down and dirty and focus on working,” he told the camera.
The budding screenwriter taught himself Japanese, and one of his recent screenplays is about an American boarding school student who travels to Japan to compete in an international rap battle, according to the page.
