Serena Williams Shows Up At Youth Group’s Black Panther Screening

Serena Williams surprised a group of young black girls with a private screening of Black Panther on Thursday, speaking with the young women in the crowd assuring them, “This is a huge moment for us and for black people.” Serena and her husband Alexis Ohanian organized the event in San Fransisco, with approximately 40 members of the youth group Black Girls Code–a not-for-profit organization that focuses on providing technology education for African-American girls.

Though the girls knew they were at the theater to see Black Panther, they actually had no idea that Serena was going to be in the theater to watch with them. When the tennis superstar walked in the room, the crowd of 40 girls went absolutely nuts.

Williams told the group of girls, “We’ve never had a superhero movie, so, we’re so excited. I feel like I’ve waited my whole life for this.” She also said that the whole event was her husband Alexis’ idea … but then jokingly added, “It was my idea, too.”

Serena and Alexis aren’t the only celebrities out their making sure the youth gets to see Black Panther, others including Kendrick Lamar’s label TDE, Desus & Mero, and Octavia Spencer have all made sure that youth in their hometowns have the chance to see the movie.
