Will Smith on why he wanted to travel to India:

“India is just a beautiful culture. The colors, the music, the intersection of religion and cinema and just everything about this culture speaks to my personality. India has always had this other worldly pull on me, like there’s something there for me. Some kind of nourishment. It’s like something I gotta do.”

Three Bollywood tips from “Student Of The Year” Director Karan Johar:

You Can’t Be Crazy Enough: “Anyone who goes to face a Bollywood camera, even if you think you’re being crazy, you’re still not crazy enough for Bollywood.”

Tone Down The Subtlety: “On your meter from one to ten of subtlety, be a ten. Don’t be zero. Don’t be 1. Don’t be 2. Don’t be 3. There is no space for subtlety. What you think is subtle acting, it has to be like enhanced by hundreds.”

Dance Like a Madman: “Throw logic to the winds and just pretend like you’re … enough to just dance like and man.

Do you think it’s more challenging to break loose in the way Karan Johar describes?

Will Smith on Spirituality and Cinema

“As an actor, I recognize the importance and the power of belief. What we believe transforms what we create, and this has allowed cinema to reflect the collective consciousness of India and to bridge the gap between entertainment and living a meaningful life.”

Will Smith on How Spirituality and Performance are Connected:

“I learned how to entertain in Resurrection Baptist Church in West Philly so there was never any separation between performing and spirituality, but what India has made me realize is why. It’s all about that joyous reciprocation, that exchange of energy and revelation. The church, the mosque, the synagogue, the stage, the cinema, these are all theaters of introspection where we can find our roots, our home, and our higher calling. Spirituality is the first principle of everything.”

Will Smith On Dancing:

“I’m always pretty insecure about dance, especially choreography. I’m not good at choreography. If everybody’s just messing around and acting stupid, I can do that… Here’s the thing about me and dancing. I can’t dance. And I’ve somehow, by making dance records, created some weird illusion that I can dance, but I really can’t. It actually always makes me nervous.”

Were you surprised to hear that Will feels this way about dance?
