Ava Duvernay Talks ‘When They See Us’ On Van Lathan’s The Red Pill
Ava Duvernay sat down with Van Lathan on The Red Pill podcast for an in-depth discussion about the impact of her new Netflix series When They See Us. In this clip, Van asks Ava what she wants white people to get from her work and her answer is the most polite way possible to say “White people?!?! N***a please!”
She also takes issue with those of you who are on that: “Why we gotta keep making these movies about Black pain and suffering?!?”

This comment has set off a whole debate about the appropriateness of the title “auntie”.

I'm with @ava. The honorific "Auntie" desexualizes women. It started to bother me when I noticed people using it for Mary J. Mary is putting the young ones to shame; there is no reason to call her Auntie until her knees give out in another twenty years and she decides to park it.

I would use auntie as a label for a certain demographic of Black women. Old enough to be somebody mama but might not be nobody’s mama. Having a certain refined air about them and a carefree attitude. They know all the lowkey spots and prefer a good lounge over a club club.

Auntie on here is almost always talked about in a negative way so I understand why some women on here wouldn’t wanna be referred to as “auntie”

"Calling women 'auntie' is desexualizing them!"
Uh… what?

Idk why older black women are shunning the term "auntie." I guess maybe when you ARE auntie-years-old it's less endearing because it calls attention to aging.
Meanwhile I refer to myself as an auntie AND a grandma. I'm 27 though lol.

I don’t think the term Auntie is a bad thing. It’s a symbol of respect as in we look up to you and acknowledge your impact. We admire the gems of wisdom you contribute to our community. It’s not like we’re out here calling the women we look up to Gma 🥴😂 pic.twitter.com/f7EM3lhXwm
