Newt Gingrich and his lack of diplomacy are at it again.

President Obama’s regret over an American military base’s burning of Korans in Afghanistan is one sorry apology, Newt Gingrich says.

The struggling Republican presidential candidate ripped the commander in chief on Thursday, calling Obama’s apology to Afghan President Hamid Karzai “astonishing” and undeserved.

“There seems to be nothing that radical Islamists can do to get Barack Obama’s attention in a negative way and he is consistently apologizing to people who do not deserve the apology of the President of the United States period,” the ex-House Speaker said while stumping in Washington state.

The torching of the Islamic holy books has triggered deadly protests this week. Two U.S. troops were among those killed in retaliation for the burnings.

Obama issued the formal apology in a letter, after charred copies of the Koran were found in a garbage pit on a U.S. air base earlier in the week.

On Thursday, he called the act “inadvertent” and vowed to hold those involved accountable.

Detainees were allegedly using the books to pass messages to on another.

Gingrich – the first of the White House hopefuls to weigh in on the issue – added it was really Karzai who owed the U.S. an apology over the deaths of the U.S. servicemen.

“It is Hamid Karzai who woes the American people an apology, not the other way around,” he said in a statement. “This destructive double standard whereby the United States and its democratic allies refuse to hold accountable leaders who tolerate systematic violence and oppression in their borders must come to an end.”

Former Alaska governor and presidential flirt Sarah Palin echoed similar sentiments on Twitter.

“Obama apologizes for inadvertent Koran burning; now the US trained & protected Afghan Army can apologize for killing our soldiers yesterday,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, White House Spokesman Jay Carney tried to stem any criticism of the President’s remarks.

“It is wholly appropriate, given the sensitivities to this issue, the understandable sensitivities,” said Carney. “His primary concern as commander in chief is the safety of the American men and women in Afghanistan, of our military and civilian personnel there. And it was absolutely the right thing to do.”

Protesters in Afghanistan have swarmed the streets in Kabul for the fourth day in a row over the burning of the Korans.

Is Newt being a nitwit again or does his point have some validity? Especially since protesters in Afghanistan are burning effigies of “Black Dog Obama” as we speak?
