No love in the taxi cab

Gay Couple Kicked Out Of Taxi

Via Gawker reports:

A gay couple filed a human rights complaint on Monday against a Chicago-area taxi company because a driver told them to leave his cab after they shared a kiss.

The couple, Matthew McCrea, 30, and Steve White, 29, hailed the Sun Taxi cab in May at O’Hare and exchanged a kiss in the backseat on the way to McCrea’s Lakeview home. When the driver saw them kiss, he pulled the cab over on the side of the Kennedy Expressway and demanded the two men exit the cab. According to McCrea, the driver told the men it was “public transportation” and therefore they couldn’t kiss.

When the men refused to leave the cab, the driver began driving “recklessly” until he stopped in a parking lot. The men then dialed 911 and refused to leave the cab until police arrived on the scene to document the incident.

The driver, Jama Anshur, told police that the couple had been “making sex.” The police let him drive off, though he was later fined $1,540 by the City Cab Regulatory Department and fired by Sun Taxi. A representative for Sun Taxi told ABC7 that he feels bad for the McCrea and White, but “this is being blown out of proportion.”

McCrea argues that their lawsuit is not blowing anything out of proportion. He believes publicizing the incident will help others see that “what happened to us isn’t right, and we want to make sure other people, if they find themselves in this situation, they know it’s not OK.”
