What We Know About Cyntoia Brown
Over the past few days, celebrities have brought the story of Cyntoia Brown has come back to the forefront. The story of a young girl sentenced to “life” in prison has been around since 2004, but it’s back on many people’s minds and we sincerely hope a change comes out of it. So without further ado, let’s see what happened to Brown and how we can help.
Brown was a victim of sex trafficking. She was being sexually abused by a man she was living with who ordered her to get money from a man named Johnny Allen. She was afraid Allen would kill her so she shot him first. The prosecution argued that she shot him to steal from him.
This speaks to a bigger issue. As of 2016, 183 people serving life sentences in Tennessee were sentenced as teens.
Brown is a upstanding citizen in prison. She’s gotten an associate’s degree and is a mentor to other girls.
This is her giving a speech after getting her degree
This case happened in 2004 and is just now getting the national attention it deserves.
Brown is 28 years old now
There’s actually a documentary that breaks this all down.
Under Tennessee law, children convicted of first degree murder have to serve 51 (!!!) years before being eligible for parole.
Kim Kardashian has gotten her lawyers involved and is trying to help

did we somehow change the definition of #JUSTICE along the way?? cause….. Something is horribly wrong when the system enables these rapists and the victim is thrown away for life! To each of you responsible for this child's sentence I hope to God you don't have children, because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already! #FREECYNTOIABROWN #HowManyMore
Rihanna also pledged support
There are petitions going around to try to get the case retried
