Angelo David Talks New Hair Extension Trends & How To End Hair Breakage

It’s the holiday season, so that means many people want to look their best as they attend holiday parties and spend time with loved ones. With that in mind, BOSSIP spoke with celebrity hairstylist and hair care expert Angelo David, of the Angelo David Salon in Manhattan, about how you can protect yourself from hair loss without sacrificing the fun, beauty and variety of using hair extensions.”

BOSSIP: What are some of the newest methods of application to get extensions?
AD: “Tape-in hair extensions have taken over the hair extension market because they are safe and easy to apply. Using a cylinder attachment method is also popular. Both of these methods rely on re-useable hair extensions. Matching the client’s hair color, thickness, texture, density and length is very important when creating a seamless look with these methods.”

BOSSIP: What are some of the dangers of improperly applied extensions?

AD: “Just a few include permanent hair loss, bald patches, breakage and headaches. That’s why at Angelo David, our Couture Extensions are completely customized for a natural look and a perfect fit. They can also solve almost any hair challenge, including thinning hair and hair loss. We offer dozens of application methods, and all use 100% human hair extensions. During the consultation, we match the client’s own hair to the extensions for a perfect color and texture match.”

BOSSIP: How can women protect themselves from hair loss from extensions?
AD: “1. Choose the right hair extensions for your hair, see an expert and do not take any shortcuts. Do your research.
2. Use the correct hair brush. I recommend Angelo David Paddle Brushes ( $35, $55 and $65 at http://www.angelodavid.com). My brushes promote healthier hair and stimulate the scalp through an ideal balance of naturally conditioning boar bristles and gently separating nylon bristles. Precise bristle placement ensures tangle-free brushing and inhibits split ends. All these brushes have double-cushioned, flexible padding that adjusts to the contours of the scalp and a balanced handle for excellent grip and control. They’re great for blow drying and brushing both natural and Couture hair.
3. Hair extensions must be brushed before you wash your hair. Do not wash your hair under a sink or with your head flipped upside down, since this can encourage tangling. Shampoo your hair in the shower.
4. When shampooing, apply the shampoo when your hair is wet, and be very gentle. Stroke your hair instead of scrubbing and rubbing it.”

BOSSIP: And how can they protect themselves from hair loss in general?
AD: “In general, hair loss has a variety of causes, such as an unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet, pregnancy, genetics, medication and stress. I like to call hair “strain” a self-inflicted hair loss—it’s when the hair gets compounded by damage from over-processed color, chemicals, using hot tools too often and at too-high temperatures, using the wrong hairbrush and cleansing the scalp too infrequently.”

BOSSIP: What are some of the new trends/products/services in the hair extensions space?
AD: The newest trend is Couture Hair Toppers, which address thinning-hair issues on the top of your head. They add length, volume and thickness simultaneously.

BOSSIP: How can women maintain and protect their hair while wearing hair pieces?
AD:“Go to the salon regularly to maintain these hair pieces, and make sure that your hairstylist is not using aggressive applications or attachments methods.”
