Awards show season is in full swing, with the 2021 American Music Awards providing fans with their latest fix of red carpet looks and killer onstage performances from their favorite artists.

This year’s installment of the largest fan-voted award show was hosted by none other than Cardi B, making for exciting television even when performers weren’t on the stage.
Olivia Rodrigo and The Weeknd each led the nominations with seven and six nods, respectively. Right behind them were Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, and Giveon each receiving five nominations. Unlike most awards shows, The AMAs winners are voted on by fans, with new categories this year including favorite trending song, favorite gospel artist and favorite Latin duo or group.
BTS ended up taking home the prestigious artist of the year award, along with favorite pop duo or group and favorite pop song for “Butter.” Megan Thee Stallion–who pulled out of her performance with BTS the day before the show–also received three wins, for favorite trending song for “Body,” female hip-hop artist and hip-hop album for “Good News.” Doja Cat also got three trophies, winning collaboration of the year for “Kiss Me More” with SZA, along with favorite female R&B artist and R&B album for “Planet Her.”
As for the performances, the night was filled with memorable displays from the biggest names in the music industry. Chlöe made her AMAs debut at the 2021 ceremony with a fiery performance of her hit song, “Have Mercy.” Bad Bunny took the stage with Tainy and Julieta Venegas for the debut performance of their collaboration, “Lo Siento BB :/.” Plus, Silk Sonic performed their latest single, “Smokin Out The Window” live for the first time singe dropping their debut album.
One of the most surprising and beloved performances of the night came when New Edition and New Kids on the Block took us back in time by performing some of their biggest hits — from NKOTB’s “The Right Stuff,” “Step by Step” and “Hangin’ Tough” to NE’s “Candy Girl,” “Mr. Telephone Man” “Is This the End” and “Can You Stand the Rain.” In the end, the two groups joined together for a rendition of New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love.”
