The Most Surprising Celebrity Breakups Of The Decade

UPDATED: 9:02 A.M. ET,  September 10, 2020 —

For the final day of the decade, it’s important we spend time on what really matters: celebrity breakups.

A lot has happened over the past 11 years. It seems like just yesterday Kim K was on Keeping Up With The Kardashians talking about her boyfriend Reggie Bush and Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey were making headlines for their secretive wedding–but a lot of our favorite celebrity couples met their demise during the last decade. Some have welcomed children, and have gone on to find love elsewhere. Others are still fairing the rocky waves of their relationship.  Some, are no longer here with us like Glee actress Naya Rivera who tragically passed away in July of this year.

Now that 2020 is here, let’s take a look at the most surprising celebrity breakups of the decade and where they are now:

Kim Kardashian & Reggie Bush (2010)

Thankfully, just like “The Bush and The Tush,” celebrity couple names in general seem to be a thing of the past.

The reality star and her baller boyfriend dated for 3 years and briefly split in 2009 before reuniting, but ended up breaking up for good in 2010. According to reports, Reggie was unable to deal with Kim’s rising level of fame–and the fact that their relationship was plastered all over the internet thanks to storylines on Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

In the end, Kim ended up with her match made in heaven and probably the only person in the world just as used to fame as her: Kanye West.  As for Reggie, he seems to have found happiness too…with a woman a lot of people think look just like Kim K. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with having a type…right?

Kim and Kanye currently have four children together, but things haven’t always been easy.  Back in July, Kanye experienced another meltdown via Twitter following his presidential rally appearance (Yes he’s attempting to run for president). The rapper and Grammy award-winning producer made claims that Kim and her mother Kris Jenner, tried to “lock him up.”

Kanye was officially diagnosed with bi-polar disorder in 2016 according to News.

Since then, we’ve seen him struggle publically with his mental health issues.  In an interview with Vogue in 2019, Kim opened up about her husband’s battle with the condition and that he wasn’t taking medication:

“For him, being on medication is not really an option, because it just changes who he is,” she explained during the interview.

“Right now everything is really calm. But we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.”

Kardashian continued:

“I think some of the hurtful things that I read online: ‘What is she doing? She’s not stopping him …’ Like it’s my fault if he does or says something that they don’t agree with?

“That’s my husband,” she said. “I share every opinion that I have and let him know when I think something’s wrong. Or if it comes to him being in the middle of a bipolar episode, I’ll do everything to be supportive and help to calm the situation.”

It seems as though Kim is making every effort to keep her marriage strong with Kanye and protect their happy family.

Kanye West & Amber Rose (2010)

Well, would you look at fate! Kanye and Kim both newly single in 2010 (well, beside that whole Kris Humphries thing. Anyway…)

Amber Rose and Kanye West were the “it” couple for two years before calling things off at the beginning of the decade. At the time, there were reports that Kanye was so engrossed in recording My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy that he didn’t have time to focus on anything else–especially a relationship.

But later, in 2012, Amber called Kim Kardashian a homewrecker, saying she was the reason for their breakup. She claims Kim was cheating on Reggie Bush with Kanye during their relationship, saying that Kim had been texting Kanye and sending him proactive photos.

A whole lot has happened in the nearly 10 years since, but Amber was just on Instagram listening to some Kanye with her current boo and baby daddy A.E., so there doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings…at least anymore.

Prior to linking up with A.E., Amber was in a long time relationship with Wiz Khalifa.  They began dating directly after the split between Rose and Kanye in early 2011. The couple later got engaged in 2012 and shortly after, married in 2013. Things seemed to be going incredibly well until the former couple split just two years later in March of 2015. They share a son together named Sebastian Taylor Thomaz.   In an interview with Larry King that year, Amber revealed the reason why the two called it quits. Apparently, they just  “wanted different things”  but maintained a great friendship in order to provide a healthy co-parenting environment for their son Sabastian.

Amber now has a second child with boyfriend A.E. named Slash Electric who she conceived in October of 2019.

Heidi Klum & Seal (2012)

2012 started with the split of one couple that seemed to be living in a fairytale, Seal and Keidi Klum. After almost a decade of extravagant parties and vow renewals every single year, the couple shocked fans by announcing their divorce.

At the time of their split, TMZ reported some pretty unfavorable things about Seal, making it seem like his ways were a big reason for their demise.  According to the tabloid, “Seal’s inability to control his anger has become too much for Heidi to take, in no small part because it’s affecting their children.” They also wrote that there was no infidelity from either side, but she reportedly grew tired of his “hard partying ways.”

Seven years after the split, things seem to be all good between these two–in 2017, Seal even appeared on an episode of America’s Got Talent alongside Klum, who was a judge on the series at the time.

Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson & Evelyn Lozada (2012)

Two months was all it took for Evelyn Lozada and Chad Ochocinco’s holy matrimony to go seriously downhill.

After a July wedding and 41 days of marriage, the NFL player and the reality star’s divorce was finalized in September. Johnson was arrested August 11 on a domestic violence charge, after he allegedly head-butt his wife during a heated argument. The situation reportedly escalated after Lozada confronted him about a condom receipt she found in his car.

Evelyn filed for divorce three days later and Johnson pled was sentenced to 12 months probation. Since then, Lozada has said publicly that she forgives her ex-husband and Johnson has apologized.

Kris Jenner & Caitlyn Jenner (2014)

After a whopping 22 years of marriage, Kris and Caitlyn announced their separation in October of 2013.

“We are living separately and we are much happier this way, but we will always have much love and respect for each other,” they said in a joint statement to E! News. “Even though we are separated, we will always remain best friends and, as always, our family will remain our number one priority.”

In April of 2015, after years of rumors surrounding the subject, Caitlyn came out as transgender in a 20/20 special with Diane Sawyer, revealing that she had been taking hormones since before ever dating Kris. In the years since, there has been a lot of back-and-forth from both sides on the status of their relationship–but lately, it’s not looking too cordial between the two.

Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose (2014)

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa started dating in 2011, gave birth to their adorable son Sebastian in February of 2013, and got married a few months later. After a little over a year of holy matrimony, the couple announced their split in September of 2014.

The announcement of their break-up brought on rumors of infidelity from both sides with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg claiming that Amber walked in on Wiz cheating with a pair of twin sisters, though Khalifa claimed he has already told his wife things were over weeks prior.

A few years later, Amber admitted in interviews that if the two hadn’t rushed into marriage, they would probably still be together today.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon (2014)

After rumors that the couple’s marriage was on the rocks, Nick Cannon’s sources finally announced his split from Mariah Carey at the tail end of 2014, revealing that they were already living apart and that things between them had been bad for a while.

The couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony in 2008 only a few weeks after they began dating, and a couple years later, they had two children together: twins Moroccan and Monroe. Their divorce didn’t get finalized until 2016 when Mariah was preparing to wed her now-ex-fiance James Packer–but fast forward to 2019, and Nick is claiming he’d be up for getting back together with the pop icon.

On an episode of T.I.’s podcast, Cannon revealed that monogamy and marriage simply aren’t for him–but if he was to ever get married again, it would only be to Mariah.

Big Sean & Naya Rivera (2014)

What the hell was in the water back in 2014?

Just like several other couples on the list, Big Sean and Glee star Naya Rivera met their demise in 2014.

In April, the couple called off their engagement, which started a ton of rumors and controversy surrounding the reason for their split. According to Big Sean’s rep, the rapper was the one to end the couple’s relationship–but there were also reports that he had been cheating on Naya.

Just a few months later, in July, Rivera surprised everyone when she secretly married her longtime friend, actor Ryan Dorsey, whom she got with following her break-up from Sean. Given the speed at which she moved on, fans quickly started to speculate that something wasn’t right here. Reports spread that Naya married Ryan in the same location, on the same date, and wearing the same dress as she was planning to wed Big Sean, though that was never confirmed.

Unfortunately, Naya Rivera passed away this year (2020). The actresses’ body was found in Lake Piru on July 13th and fans all over the world were stunned with grief. Naya left behind her 4-year-old son Josey, whom she shared with Ryan Dorsey. Big Sean wrote a heartfelt eulogy on social media calling the star a “hero.”

Robin Thicke & Paula Patton (2014)

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s 20-year relationship came to a close in February of 2014.

These two had been dating on and off since they were only 14-years-old and got married in 2005 before welcoming their son, Julian Fuego Thicke, in 2010. Though it’s not confirmed why they actually broke up, Robin was spotted getting cozy with women while partying with Kanye West at a Paris nightclub only a month before they announced their plans for divorce.

After the break-up, Thicke ended up making multiple public attempts to win his wife back, dedicating songs to her during concerts and performing a track called “Get Her Back” at award shows. He even named his album Paula only a few months after they split.

Ciara & Future (2014)

After more than two years together, Ciara and Future broke up in 2014 following reports that the rapper was unfaithful.

Ciara called off her engagement in August, only three months after giving birth to their son, Future Zahir Wilburn. On a 2019 episode of Red Table Talk, Ciara remembered how tough it was to decide to leave–even though she knew for a while that the relationship wasn’t going to work. She admits that she was afraid of being a single mother, but ultimately took control of the situation by traveling all over of the world with her son to bond with her newborn.

Ciara’s now-husband Russell Wilson came into her life when baby Future was only a few months old, and now, they seem to be the happiest couple on the face of the earth. Ciara and hubby just welcomed their second child together in late July.  Baby Win is super cute too. Ci Ci and Russell had their baby girl Sienna, in 2017.

As for Future, well….that’s a whole different list than the one we’re on right now.  It seems as though after he split with Ciara, his love life has been all over the place.

Future was in a relationship with entrepreneur Joie Chavis but that shortly fizzled out. After that, he found himself in a situation-ship with Eliza Reign, and they conceived a child together. The ex-couple have been battling out an ugly child support case in court which was recently settled, with Eliza set to receive $3200 a month.

Steve Harvey’s stepdaughter, Lori Harvey came into the picture in January of this year, but things slowly began to take a turn for the worst.  In August, the two appeared to have gone their separate ways. Both Future and Lori deleted pictures of one another on social media and have not been seen together since. Looks like Future just can’t get any love.

La La & Carmelo Anthony (2017)

La La and Carmelo Anthony’s on-again, off-again relationship has been making headlines constantly over the past few years.

The couple first got together in 2004 before getting married in 2010, but in 2017, they broke-up amid rumors that Carmelo had been cheating. Despite living separately, these two seemingly reunited in 2018 and have been continuing to co-parent their 12-year-old son Kiyan together. According to US Weekly, the couple decided to reconcile their relationship after Carmelo’s infidelity in 2016.

Now, it’s not really clear on whether or not these two are together or not, but over the summer of 2019, La La was said to be “exploring her legal options” following photos of Carmelo partying on a boat with a mystery woman. As of December 2019, there’s still no divorce papers, so it seems like this is a rollercoaster neither party is getting off anytime soon.

Things have not been easy for the couple but they are taking their time to heal their marriage. In May of 2019, The Power actress revealed to US that they were still experiencing some rough patches:

“Marriage is hard,” La La continued, “I tell everybody that, and it’s one day at a time, and that’s what we’re doing. Just trying to take it one day at a time.”

Nicki Minaj & Meek Mill (2017)

After two years of dating, rap superstars Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill ended things in 2017.
Nicki is the one who announced the break-up, taking to Twitter to inform her fans of such a personal life update. “To confirm, yes I am single,” Minaj tweeted on January 5. “Focusing on my work & looking forward to sharing it with you guys really soon. Have a blessed New Year. Love u”
During the relationship, both parties seemed to feel like each other was “the one,” with Meek admitting after things ended that no matter what, him dating someone he pined after for so long was a win. “It was a win. I got Nicki when I was…like, I came up. I always wanted Nicki my whole life,” he said. “I used to talk Nicki Minaj—remember I had the rap about it? I bagged that. So, that was a win of course.”
While it’s not clear what happened to cause the end of their relationship, Minaj has admitted that her then-boyfriend Meek’s feud with her longtime friend Drake in 2015 was “one of the hardest parts of [her] career.”
Nicki Minaj has since moved on and is now expecting a child with her new hubby Kenneth Petty.
Meek Mill has been celebrating too.  Last year he ended a  12 – year – long legal case for a misdemeanor gun charge.

Diddy & Cassie (2018)

After holding out for almost the entire decade, Diddy and Cassie called it quits at the end of 2018.

After rumors surfaced that Diddy was dating someone new, Cassie confirmed in a statement to LoveBScott that her and the music mogul has broken up months prior.

The pair first met in the 2000s after Cassie’s first single “Me & U” gained traction, later releasing her self-titled debut studio album on Diddy’s label, Bad Boy Records. Their working relationship soon transformed into a romantic one, but they kept it under wraps until publicizing things in 2012.

Now, only a year after announcing their split, Cassie has found herself in a happy relationship with celebrity trainer, Alex Fine. The two got married back in September and welcomed their first child together in December.

Wendy Williams & Kevin Hunter (2019)

Rounding out the most surprising break-ups of the decade is Wendy Williams and her divorce from Kevin Hunter.

In 2019, Wendy finally put her foot down and filed for divorce from her husband of over 20 years.

After getting married in 1997, Kevin first cheated 3 years later following the birth of their son, which Wendy revealed in her memoir, Wendy’s Got The Heat. Even though the talk show host credited that incident to making their marriage stronger, it seems like Hunter just never stopped cheating. He was reportedly living a double life with his mistress, Sharina Hudson, and after putting up with a decade of cheating, Wendy filed for divorce after news broke that Hudson was pregnant.

Wendy Williams will be detailing their rocky relationship in her new biopic set to premiere in 2021. The film will show the growth of Wendy’s mega-media career and also reveal the highs and lows of her childhood.
